Kate Oh Gallery proudly announces “A Year of Displaced Energy,” a solo exhibition of artworks by Alfred Kelman. Kelman is the unprecedented 3-time winner of the Directors Guild of America Awards for documentary excellence. He also holds 7 Emmys for producing and directing the long-running CBS series “The Body Human”. During his early career, he was nominated for an Oscar for Eugene O’Neil documentary film “The Face of Genius”. Years later Mr. Kelman produced the George C. Scott classic “Christmas Carol”. Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Kelman has produced or directed over 100 films and documentaries.
His fondest memory was when he was granted an exclusive interview with the Reverend Martin Luther King following the Selma Alabama March in a special documentary “Martin Luther King in Boston”. Later in his career, he enrolled at the Art Student League for the study of figure drawing. Kelman says that the year spent there gave him as much pleasure as his long star-studded career.
At the Art Student’s League, Kelman studied with Michael Burban who also has taught at the National Academy of Design, the Cooper Union, and Columbia University. As Burban wrote in his book, Lessons from Michaelangelo: Figure Drawing Based on Techniques of the Master, he is interested in the “process and magic of drawing the human figure”.
Under Burban’s tutelage, Kelman drew energetic lines that form nudes on horses, horses, and the human figure. He used charcoal and pencil for his line making, creating skillful contours that reflect his study of the Great Old Masters.
