Biography
Losang Gyatso was born in Tibet but has spent most of his life in the UK and US where he has lived since 1975. He was an Art Director and restaurant operator in New York City, an actor in Martin Scorsese's film Kundun, and Chief of VOA Tibetan radio and TV broadcasts into Tibet before turning to making art full time in 2017. Initially a project for reconciling his own identity after decades of living in places far from Tibet, Gyatso's paintings have evolved over time from wide ranging explorations of Tibetan myths and Buddhist cultural aesthetics, towards a more universal, abstract, and playful way of seeing the world that is at once sensual and spiritual. His work has been in almost every US museum exhibition on contemporary Tibetan art in the last 15 years, and are a part of passionate personal collections in Europe and the US.
